Dan O'Brien, PE, Founder
Mr. O'Brien founded the company as O'Brien & Associates in 1975 in response to the energy crisis of the 1970s. The company was driven by his fire and enthusiasm for the environment and sustainability – even before the term's popularity. His experience with project management, construction management, mechanical, controls, and plumbing design of systems for commercial, institutional, industrial, educational and public sector projects spans over 35 years. Dan's mastery of central plant design, renovation, modernization and infrastructure makes him one of the region's foremost experts in his discipline.

Dan has conducted and participated in energy audits and analysis of over 300 buildings (commercial, residential, industrial, and institutional), keeping a focus on helping the client conserve capital, energy and the environment. He has managed planning and development at a small non-hub airport with responsibilities for grant planning/funding, design/construction team selection and management, project costs and scheduling, coordination with other planning jurisdictions. He has also practiced as an expert witness in litigation cases for construction defects.
Dan has taught HVAC design courses at San José State University and has presented at a number of seminars to promote efficient facilities and the benefits of sustainability.
Dan is a registered Professional Engineer in the states of California and Washington. Dan has worked on accounts such as the University of California, Santa Cruz, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Monterey Peninsula College, PG&E, Varian Associates and the Washington State Department of Corrections.
Carl Salas, PE, Founder
Carl Salas is one of our firm's founders and principals and has been with the firm since 1979.
Carl has been evaluating and re-designing existing facility infrastructures and power systems since 1974. During that time, he has surveyed, tested or designed literally thousands of energy systems, energy-efficiency projects, infrastructure/ projects and advanced/energy projects. Along with his "real world" approach to energy engineering, he has assisted in financial justification and life cycle costing for numerous commercial, industrial, and institutional projects. As an expert in his field, Carl has been an expert witness in both Residential and Commercial litigation cases.
Throughout his professional career, he has authored books about Sustainability and Energy. He has instructed more than 5,000 engineers and facility managers in the "art and practice” of energy-based systems engineering. His excellent communications skills allow him to leverage his technical and financial expertise making him an exemplary speaker for multiple audiences.

As a founder, Carl has created and maintains close relationships with a multitude of our clients including San Jose State University, the City of Palo Alto, Pacific Gas & Electric and Blach Construction.
Carl is a registered Professional Engineer in the states of California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and Minnesota. Since 1980, he has developed and presented 2-day seminars regarding Energy Auditing, Energy Management, CFC Mitigation, and Distributed Generation. Currently, he is co-instructing a 2-day seminar entitled Fundamentals of Sustainable Development and Carbon Management and Governs the Awards Committee with the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE).
Roy Goodman, PE, Principal
Roy Goodman is one of our firm's founders and principals and has been with the firm since 1978.
Roy leads our Quality Assurance Department, without his keen attention to detail the firm would not be where it is today. Roy is one of the most respected engineers in the area and continually guides our staff in the techniques and principles of ‘getting it right the first time.' Due to his boundless efforts, Salas O'Brien's clients see fewer change orders which translates to saving a considerable amount of time, hassle, and money.
Over the last 30 years Roy has developed an expertise in project & construction management, mechanical, controls, and hydronic design systems for commercial, institutional, residential, industrial, educational, and public sector projects. In campus environments, his command of both the big picture and technical aspects of planning and constructing central utility plants, cogeneration systems, and water distribution systems are key to virtually every large project we undertake. Roy has a history of acting as the lead project manager for complete renovation/modernization projects from the study phase through design and construction. He is a mentor and team player and has a true understanding of how to lead, inspire, and bring out the best from the people around him.
Roy is a registered Professional Engineer and has worked on various projects for organizations such as Foothill-DeAnza Community College District, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula and The City of San Jose Redevelopment Agency.
John Salas, PE, CEM, LEED AP, Managing Principal
John Salas is one of our firm's founders and principals and has been with the firm since 1979.
Over the last 25 years John has developed an expertise in project & construction management, mechanical, controls, and plumbing design systems for commercial, institutional, residential, industrial, educational, and public sector projects. John has been involved in complex central plant planning and design, HVAC system build-outs, and control systems integration. John has managed complete renovation/modernization projects from the study phase through design and construction. His experience includes extensive commissioning of energy management systems that is becoming more and more important to both our clients and for the sustainable future. As an expert in his field, John has been an expert witness in an array of litigation cases covering various issues, including construction defects.
John has recently instructed a HVAC (Heating Ventilating & Air Conditioning) course at San Jose State University & for the last 10 years instructed controls classes for the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE).
John has worked with various types of clients, including Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, GE Nuclear Energy, Las Vegas Building Commission, and HSBC. John currently holds registrations as a Professional Engineer, Certified Energy Manager, Green Building Engineer and is Leadership Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Accredited.
